What you'll do

As mechanical technician you will be part of a team working on designing, developing, validating concepts, procedures, and tools to produce demonstrators and short models of superconducting accelerator magnets – how exciting is that? You will contribute in-field to prototyping and construction activities in relation with the engineering and construction of superconducting magnets. This is a great opportunity to learn on the job.

Your responsibilities

  • Participate to the different phases of the fabrication of superconducting coils (based on Low Temperature Superconducting technology), such as cable insulation and respooling, winding and curing, preparation for heat treatment, splicing, preparation for epoxy impregnation, vacuum pressure impregnation, finishing and metrology.
  • Participate to the assembly of superconducting demonstrators and short model magnets.
  • Support production activities by preparing or modifying mechanical components on conventional machines (milling, turning).
  • Participate to the development of custom made tooling.

Your profile

  • Experience in mechanics, manufacturing techniques and assembly of systems to tight tolerances.
  • Experience in the development of first-of-a-kind systems, which require the construction of mock-ups and dedicated tooling would be an advantage.
  • Basic experience with Computer Aided Design software, such as Catia, Solidworks or AutoCAD, would be an advantage.
  • Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering (or a related field).

Your skills

  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Reading of mechanical drawings, including ISO-GPS tolerancing.
  • Basic skills in the use of conventional chips removal machines.
  • Quality control, writing procedure and test reports.

Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State. Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for positions with a 2026 start date, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in a technical or administrative field and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma or a shorter non-university degree. You can’t hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Please pay attention to the additional criteria and requirements for this specific position and mentioned above.
