What you'll do
Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute to the Future Circular Collider (FCC), one of the most ambitious scientific projects ever envisioned? Help develop the coating technology that will equip its vacuum chambers with a Non-Evaporable Getter thin film.
Working alongside experienced engineers, technicians and physicists, you will contribute to the design, fabrication and coating.
You will be involved at every stage of the process. We will provide all the necessary training and support, making this an excellent opportunity to develop specialist skills in a unique international environment.
Your responsibilities
- Design & construction of mechanical parts for customised physical vapor deposition systems and associated tooling.
- Assembly of coating setups operating in Ultra High Vacuum.
- Validation of the coating technology and process (in real scale prototypes up to 12 meter long beam pipes).
- Validation of the vacuum performance of the coatings produced (in Ultra High Vacuum systems).

Your profile
- Experience in machining metal parts in lathe and milling machines. CNC would be an advantage.
- Familiarity in using CAD software to design mechanical parts.
- Practical experience in assembling mechanical equipment.
- Experience in vacuum technology would be an advantage.
- Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering.
Your skills
- Working in teams.
- Curious and proactive.
- Knowledge of vacuum technology would be an advantage.
- Knowledge on welding would be an advantage.
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.
Employment conditions
- A valid driving licence.
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State. Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani, Lithuanian, Latvian, Cypriot, Croatian and Turkish nationals, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
- By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in a technical or administrative field and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma or a shorter non-university degree. You can’t hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
