What you'll do

The Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group, within the Engineering Department (EN), is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to follow-up the construction, planning, maintenance and upgrade of the FCC-ee arc half cell mock-up. The FCC-ee is one of the proposed new accelerators to be built at CERN in the coming years.

Your responsibilities

  • You will support the FCC WP11 team with engineering calculations for the safe operation and upgrade of the mock-up, including static, modal, vibrational, and thermal analyses.
  • You will allocate roughly half of your time to calculation work and the other half to coordinating and following up on in-situ activities such as maintenance, upgrades, testing campaigns, and visits.
  • You will participate in regular project meetings, present your results, and actively contribute to project progress.
  • You will collaborate closely with the groups involved in the FCC-ee Pre-TDR study.

Your profile

  • Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Your skills

  • You have proficiency in finite element analysis software for thermal and structural simulations (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
  • You have a solid understanding of the behaviour and design principles of ductile and brittle materials. You have initial experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., CATIA).
  • You are familiar with international standards related to the design and safety of structural and pressure equipment (e.g., Eurocode, EN-13445), which would be an asset.
  • You are willing to participate in the definition, planning, and follow-up of on-site activities.

Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field and your highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. You must have a university degree and can’t hold a PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
