What you'll do
Join the Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) group at CERN to contribute to the production and the functional testing activities of the Hybrid circuits for the CMS Phase-2 Outer Tracker Upgrade. In this project, you will gain experience in the qualification and production of state-of-the-art instrumentation being manufactured for the CMS detector upgrade. You will help us to make reality a large-scale upgrade project where unprecedented complexity pairs with unprecedented scale.
Your responsibilities
- Contribute to the quality control and testing of prototype circuits; install, verify and maintain large-scale test systems at multiple high-tech industrial contractors.
- Contribute to the engineering support for the industrial partners to set-up and maintain the manufacturing processes of the hybrids.
- Support the organisation and logistics efforts required for the production of hybrids, collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including hardware, software, quality control and physics experts to define and implement quality requirements.
- Provide engineering support for the debugging, repair and production of a large-scale automated test system.
- Prepare documentation and reports to the collaboration about the progress of the testing activity and the manufacturing.

Your profile
- Knowledge of testing electronic components and prototypes, using laboratory instruments (oscilloscopes, power supply, multimeter etc).
- Knowledge of test system development (hardware and software), including experience in Python and C+.
- Experience in liaison with industry partners and quality control of electronic circuits.
- Experience with SQL databases and data analysis would be an advantage..
- Your studies focused on Electronic Engineering.
Your skills
- PCB design and basics of PCB manufacturing technology.
- Ability to devise original approaches to solving multidisciplinary problems.
- Work independently and set priorities.
- A team player who can thrive in a complex and technically challenging project as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Software development management techniques (e.g. continuous integration and version control).
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

- By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field and your highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. You must have a university degree and can’t hold a PhD.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
