What you'll do

Join CERN’s CMS team and provide support on radiation protection matters while taking charge of simulations to evaluate the operation scenarios of the detectors and define the needed shielding. You will also participate in long shutdown activities as key member of the field radiation protection team, and provide directions and support to the different teams involved in the process.

Your responsibilities

  • Support the CMS Technical Coordination (TC) Team in operational matters during shutdowns relating to radiation. protection and optimisation of personnel dose.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies and simulations for shielding options and upgrade planning, as relevant.
  • Perform simulations of prompt radiation throughout detectors and cavern.
  • Collaborate with HSE-Radio Protection on activation-scenario simulations, especially during shutdowns, to optimise ALARA planning.

Your profile

  • Knowledge of radiation protection, operational dosimetry, and safety planning;
  • Demonstrated experience in Monte Carlo radiation-transport simulations using FLUKA;
  • Experience in radiation measurements and benchmarking;
  • Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics, Engineering or a related field. RP qualification from a certified body would be a plus.

  • Knowledge and application of ionising radiation;
  • Simulation of radiation environments;
  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques;
  • Knowledge of Radiation Safety and personal dosimetry;

Medical hazard

  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.
Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

Employment conditions

  • A valid driving licence.
  • Shift work and participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organisation.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
