What you'll do
As an Electrical Engineer, you will join the Engineering Department (EN), specifically the EN-AA-CSE team, to work on the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study.
The Future Circular Collider study is developing designs for the next generation of higher-performance particle colliders that could follow the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The FCC Feasibility Study investigated the technical and financial viability of the FCC at CERN. By looking at the geological and environmental conditions, as well as technically feasible concepts for infrastructures, civil engineering, and detectors. In anticipation of a final decision and a Technical Design Report (TDR), the FCC study enters a reference design phase, where refinement of concepts will take place to allow rapid and smooth transition to civil engineering procurement.
The CERN Access and Alarms group (EN-AA) is tasked to contribute to the analysis and design of the necessary fire safety systems in this new facility. It will be housed in a new underground circular tunnel with a circumference of 90.7 km, and access shaft depths between 180 and 400 m, with eight surface sites and four experiments.
Your responsibilities
- Carrying out fire risk analysis in collaboration with safety experts and members of the study team.
- Identification of possible solutions, both off-the-shelf and custom to reduce the fire risk to an acceptable level.
- Identification of needs for fire safety systems and of their high-level requirements.
- Design engineering - high-level design of electrical safety systems and cabling/powering requirements.
- Preparation of technical studies, cost estimations, project documents, and review of documents prepared by other participating groups and contractors.
- Development of quality plans and documents.
- Follow up on schedule, including participation in the FCC Technical Infrastructure WG and FCC Safety WG.
- Participation in personnel safety systems-oriented activities of EN-AA to gain hands-on experience with the particularities of these kinds of installations.
