What you'll do

You will join the LHCb Technical Coordination section of the LHCb group. You will be part of the LHCb design office, contributing to the CAD modelling of the LHCb detector and helping to develop LHCb digital mock-up and digital twin methodologies that will support installation planning, maintenance, and operation for the next milestones of the experiment.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to the conceptual design and development of mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with physicists, engineers, and technicians to translate conceptual requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Produce engineering documentation, technical specifications, 3D models, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Support the manufacturing, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.

Your profile

  • Initial experience in designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5, PDM/PLM environments, or structured engineering data management; familiarity with these tools is considered an advantage.
  • Exposure to the machining of parts, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems is considered an advantage.
  • Familiarity with 3D scanning, reverse engineering, or digital twin concepts is considered an advantage.

Your skills

  • Ability to work effectively in an international, multidisciplinary team with physicists, engineers, and technicians is mandatory.
  • 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting skills, preferably using CATIA V5 (or an equivalent CAD system, with a willingness to learn CATIA), are mandatory.
  • Good knowledge of mechanical drawing standards, dimensioning and tolerancing (ISO GPS), materials, and manufacturing processes, is mandatory.
  • Basic programming skills, ideally in JavaScript and/or Python, are optional.

  • Radiation worker, category A.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain conditions.
Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State. Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani, Lithuanian, Latvian, Cypriot, Croatian and Turkish nationals, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field and your highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. You must have a university degree and can’t hold a PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Please pay attention to the additional criteria and requirements for this specific position and mentioned above.
