What you'll do

Are you interested in developing measurement, control and monitoring tools that are used on real scientific infrastructure?


You will join a team working on various measurement instrumentation and control applications used to operate, supervise, and improve CERN systems. You will contribute to the development and evolution of software built with LabVIEW and Python, supporting both existing operational tools and new developments. This includes applications used for vacuum measurements, data logging, gas analysis and the integration of instrumentation into CERN’s control environment. The role also includes work related to new installations and upgrades, where reliable monitoring, automation and safe operation are essential.

This is an opportunity to work close to equipment, users and experts, and to contribute to tools that are directly relevant for daily operation, commissioning and future upgrades. You will gain practical experience in measurement, controls, software integration, instrumentation and test environments, while learning CERN working methods and standards in a highly collaborative setting.


Your responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain applications for monitoring and control of vacuum instrumentation using LabVIEW and Python.
  • Contribute to software used with gas analysers, pressure gauges and related vacuum equipment.
  • Improve tools for acquisition, logging, analysis and visualisation of various data.
  • Participate in the integration of new instruments and new functionalities into the existing control infrastructure.

Your profile

  • Initial experience programming in Python.
  • Keen interest in the integration of scientific and industrial instrumentation, data acquisition, analysis and control systems.
  • Initial experience developing applications in LabVIEW would be an advantage.
  • Your studies focused on Software, Electrical/Electronics Engineering.

Your skills

  • LabVIEW; LabVIEW Real-Time and/or FPGA knowledge is an advantage.
  • Python.
  • Knowledge of Linux environments.
  • Structured, rigorous & autonomous working style.

Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State. Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani, Lithuanian, Latvian, Cypriot and Croatian nationals, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field and your highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. You must have a university degree and can’t hold a PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Please pay attention to the additional criteria and requirements for this specific position and mentioned above.
