What you'll do
As part of the Vacuum, surfaces and coatings group of the Technology Department, you will join the teams applying thin carbon coatings in the beam line of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during the next Long Shutdown. After an initial on-the-field training, you will take part in the mechanical assembly, commissioning and operation of the vacuum coating systems.
Your responsibilities
- Design mechanical parts with CAD software for the coating systems.
- Manufacture mechanical components on conventional (milling, turning) and CNC (milling) machines.
- Perform mechanical assembly of ultra-high vacuum coating systems.
- Operate the coating systems to deposit carbon thin films in the LHC beam lines.
- Propose upgrades and perform maintenance of the systems.
- Write the suitable technical documentation.
- Work in a multi-cultural team of engineers and technicians..

Your profile
- Proficiency in design of mechanical parts with CAD software.
- Practical experience in using conventional milling and turning machines.
- Experience in reading mechanical drawings.
- Practical experience in operation of vacuum system and/or coating system would be an asset.
- Experience in operating CNC machines would be an asset.
- Your studies focused on Mechanics Manufacturing.
Your skills
- Mechanical machining (conventional, CNC).
- Mechanical assembly.
- Mechanical design with CATIA, or equivalent CAD software.
- Operation of vacuum systems.
- Writing of reports.
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
Employment conditions
- A valid driving licence.
- Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization's installations.
- Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.

- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State. Currently, we cannot consider applications from Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for positions with a 2026 start date, as the ceiling defined under Article II.5 of the Associate Membership Agreement has been reached.
- By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in a technical or administrative field and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma or a shorter non-university degree. You can’t hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
