What you'll do

Join CERN’s High Power Converters (HPC) section, which is responsible for the design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of multi-MW power converters and Static Var Compensators. You will work with engineers and technicians on upgrade activities for the SPS and PS main power converters. These systems are distributed across several buildings and will undergo significant upgrades over the next three years. The role is hands-on and site-based, with strong collaboration across technical teams.

Your responsibilities

  • Realisation of 3D mechanical drawings of new electro-mechanic parts of the SPS and PS main power converters.
  • Realisation of electrical circuit diagrams for the control and protection circuits.
  • Realisation of various technical documentation.
  • Assembly and installation of new equipment.

Your profile

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Basic knowledge of power electronics principles.
  • Exposure to 3D design tools for simple mechanical parts.
  • Motivation to work in close collaboration with engineers and technicians in a multidisciplinary team.

Your skills

  • 3D CAD design (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor or similar).
  • Electrical safety awareness.
  • Electrical schematics reading.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical measurements (multimeter, oscilloscope).

Be sure to meet the eligibility criteria

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in a technical or administrative field and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma or a shorter non-university degree. You can’t hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

The SY department oversees the science and technology related to accelerator technical systems, including beam instrumentation, beam transfer, power converters, particles generation and their interaction with matter, and radio frequency systems.
