What you'll do
Great technology needs great people! Join the Fibre Optics Section in the Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) and actively participate in the design, preparation, supervision and validation of optical fibre installations. The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. The Fibre Optics Section in the Electrical Engineering Group is responsible for the management and operation of the CERN optical fibre network. Its main missions are to operate, maintain, consolidate and upgrade the fibre infrastructure connecting CERN buildings, accelerators equipment and particle detectors. Your main tasks will be related to HL-LHC project and CERN’s Personnel Safety System Consolidation (PSS-CONS) program. You will also be guided in acquiring knowledge of optical fibre infrastructure and installation techniques.
Your responsibilities
- Establish installation requirements for optical fibres;
- Prepare database registration and technical work files for the contractors;
- Contribute in drafting work planning and follow up with the contractors;
- Organise and manage worksite meetings;
- Verify the quality of the work performed by contractors and validate optical fibre installations;
- Organise and execute fibre patching and optical measurements as required;
- Organise maintenance and repair activities when required;
- Prepare work progress reports;
- Carry out studies on infrastructure consolidation and upgrades;
- Efficiently support and integrate with the Section Team in your daily work.

Your profile
- Proven ability in drawing up technical documentation, including the use of database tools, and reporting;
- Experience in the preparation of work files, as well as in work supervision and acceptance of cabling installations;
- Experience in cable installation would be an asset;
- Your studies focused on Electronics / Electrical / Telecom.
Your skills
- Basic knowledge of fibre optics and their applications;
- Ability to work independently, supervising multiple projects and competing priorities to meet scheduled completion dates;
- Detail-oriented and capable of maintaining thorough technical documentation;
- Willingness to work on optical fibre installations on-site;
- Identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them;
- Demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences, addressing issues of conflict constructively, providing others with timely information;
- Contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues;
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organisation.

- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State.
- By the application deadline, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation. You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
