What you'll do

You will join the Accelerators and Beam Physics (ABP) Group, responsible for beam performance across the entire accelerator chain—from the LHC and its injectors to future accelerator projects. Within the Non-linear Beam Dynamics and Collimation (NDC) Section, you will contribute to theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on beam dynamics and collimation, addressing beam loss management, performance optimisation and mitigation strategies through predictive modelling for proton, ion and lepton beams. Your work will support the safe and efficient operation of high-intensity accelerators and the optimisation of background conditions for current and future colliders. This role is key to CERN’s long-term vision, supporting both the High-Luminosity LHC and design studies for the Future Circular Collider (FCC).

Your responsibilities

  • You will participate in the activities related to beam collimation studies and machine-detector interface (MDI) for the CERN accelerators, their upgrades, and future accelerators, through simulations, measurements, and theoretical calculations.
  • You will contribute to the operational performance of the LHC and HL-LHC and join the R&D efforts within the FCC study.
  • You will join the ongoing efforts for accelerator codes development for these studies.
  • Specifically, you will develop optics, non-linear beam dynamics and beam collimation concepts in view of evaluating halo generation and loss mechanisms, and perform studies of collimation performance, in particular for optimization of collimation designs and MDI layouts, for CERN present and future synchrotrons and colliders, addressing proton as well as ion operation.
