Short-Term Internship Programme

Are you looking for a short training period? If you're an undergraduate student in a technical or administrative field, you might be interested to spend a practical training period of 1 to 6 months, in the framework of your studies. Take a look at our programme.

CERN offers a limited number of positions to undergraduate students for practical training assignments.

The students mostly have technical or administrative backgrounds and their university requires or encourages them to spend a training period (1 to 6 months) in industry or in a research establishment.

  • You are a full-time student at undergraduate (post-secondary) level and are at least 18.
  • Your main field of study is one of the following: applied physics, computing, mathematics, electrical, electronic, mechanical or civil engineering, instrumentation for accelerators and particle physics experiments, materials science, radiation protection, safety and environmental protection, surveying, ultra-high vacuum, scientific communication. A very limited number of places may be available in administrative fields: translation, advanced secretarial work, accounting, legal services, human resources, librarianship, logistics.
  • Your work at CERN must be an obligatory or recommended part of your studies.
  • You have a good knowledge of English and/or French.
  • You will be returning to your educational establishment after completion of your stay at CERN.
  • You have adequate financial resources to support yourself in the local area.


  • The required training period must be less than 6 months duration.
  • During the requested training period the student must remain enrolled in an educational establishment ( the following document  will need to be signed and stamped by your educational establishment as a proof of enrolment). 
  • Students must have appropriate insurance valid in the Geneva area for medical expenses and work and private accidents as well as disability arising from professional and non-professional illness and accidents and death.

In case your University needs a traineeship agreement signed, please make sure they will agree to sign only ours.



Please note that only a limited number of places are available. Applications will be considered at any time until the deadline by CERN supervisors interested in hosting a student to start their internship in 2017.
